In case there’s a default / delay in paying challan, it could lead to various consequences. Although the consequence matrix and severity of not paying a challan varies from state to state. There are few thing which are mostly common across all states, namely –

Challan / Penalty amount are issued by RTO officers may vary depending on the type of offense. Most common of these are – over-speeding, not wearing helmet when on two wheeler, seat-belt not fastened while in a four wheeler, driving in wrong lane, jumping red signal.

With the newly constructed express highways, RTOs have also adopted technology for strong enforcement. E.g. you will see such sensors installed on expressways, below example is of Mumbai-Pune expressway. AI-powered cameras are equipped with radar technology to monitor vehicle speeds and enforce traffic regulations. With this technological ennoblement, challans are issued digitally.

Not only that, in the challan, you will also see a high resolution image and various other details. See an example of an over-speeding challan. You will see –

1. High resolution image which shows the vehicle itself
2. Number plate captured in the imaged with a green highlight
3. Speed limit which depicts the speed limit of the street
4. Actual speed of the vehicle
5. Date & time of the violation
6. Latitude and Longitude where the violation took place
7. Direction (whether the vehicle was approaching towards the sensor or going towards the opposite direction of the sensor)
8. Actual Location Name
