As per Motor Vehicle Act 1988, if a person purchases a motor vehicle from the dealer the owner or the dealer from where the person has purchased the vehicle have to register the vehicle in the District Transport Office, in whose jurisdiction, the applicant has the residence or a place of business.

Documents Required to Register Vehicle in Assam

Below is the list of documents that are required to get the Vehicle registered:

• Form 21 (Sale Certificate)
• Valid Insurance Certificate
• Proof of address
• Temporary registration if any
• Road Worthiness Certificate from the manufacturer in Form No. 22
• In case of a imported vehicle a custom’s clearance certificate 
• Form 20 duly filled up. 
• Original Sale certificate from the concerned authorities in Form-21 in the case of ex-army vehicles.

Types of Vehicle Registration in Assam

There are two types of vehicle registration in Assam

Temporary Registration

It is allowed where the owner of the vehicle has to take it to any other state. Temporary Vehicle Registration is not renewable and is valid only for 1 month

Temporary Vehicle Registration Process

To get temporary vehicle registration one has to follow the steps listed below with all the documents

Step 1: To apply for the temporary number you have to fill Form 20, which serves as an application form.
Step 2: Fill Form 20 completely with all the necessary information and submit it to the RTO in whose zone the vehicle owner resides.
Step 3: Provide the list of required documents for the temporary number
i) Form-21: Sales declaration which you will get from the dealer
ii) Form-60/61  Income Tax Department or GIR or Pan card
iii) Pollution Under Control (PUC)
iv) Declaration by the candidate checked by a Notary, Executive
v) Address proof Any One (Voter ID Card/ LIC Policy/ Passport photos/ Ration Card
vi) Road Worthiness Certificate i.e. Form 22

Permanent Vehicle Registration

Under Section 39 of the Motor Vehicle Act, permanent registration of all vehicles is necessary for driving on roads in Delhi. Driving without a Registration Certificate (RC) is a punishable offense.

Step 1: To apply for a permanent number fill Form 20, which serves as an application form.
Step 2: Fill Form 20 completely with all the necessary information and submit it to the RTO in whose zone the vehicle owner resides.
