In India vehicle registration of Andaman and Nicobar Islands comes under Union Territory and , in order to maintain transportation in the capital, there are total 18 RTO Office in Andaman and Nicobar Islands which perform their duties.

Functions of Andaman and Nicobar Islands RTO

  • Administration of the Motor Vehicles Act,1988 and Rules framed there under .
  • Issuance and renewal of driving licenses/International Driving Permits
  • Registration of Vehicles and its related  activities.
  • Issuance of trade certificate to dealers of the vehicles.
  • Issue of permits to various categories of transport vehicles and issue of countersignatures in respect of other-state transport vehicles.
  • Road safety issues with special emphasis on safety of school buses.
  • Enforcement of emission and safety related norms of vehicles.
  • Management and operations of Inter -state Bus Terminals.
  • Integration of Road transport with Metro,Railways & Airports.

Types of Vehicle Registration in Andaman and Nicobar Islands

There are two types of vehicle registration in Andaman and Nicobar Islands RTO Office:

  1. Temporary Vehicle Registration : It is allowed in the cases where the owner of the vehicle has to take the it to any other state. Temporary Vehicle Registration is not renewable and is valid only for 1 month
  2. Permanent Vehicle Registration: Under Section 39 of the Motor Vehicle Act, permanent registration of all vehicles is necessary for driving on roads in Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Driving without Registration Certificate (RC) is a punishable offense.

Vehicle Registration Process in Andaman and Nicobar Islands

Normally when you buy a new vehicle RTO registration and Charges are done by the dealer itself but if case you want to get it bone by yourself then below is the process:

For Temporary Vehicle Registration:

Step 1: To apply for temporary number you have to fill Form 20, which serves as an application form.
Step 2: Fill Form 20 completely with all the necessary information and submit it to the RTO in whose zone the vehicle owner resides.
Step 3: Provide the list of required documents for the temporary number

  • i) Form-21: Sales declaration which you will get from the dealer
  • ii) Form-60/61  Income Tax Department or GIR or Pan card
  • iii) Pollution Under Control (PUC)
  • iv) Declaration by the candidate checked by a Notary, Executive
  • v) Address proof Any One (Voter ID Card/ LIC Policy/ Passport photos/ Ration Card
  • vi) Road Worthiness Certificate i.e. Form 22

For Permanent Vehicle Registration

Step 1: To apply for a permanent number fill Form 20, which serves as an application form.
Step 2: Fill Form 20 completely with all the necessary information and submit it to the RTO in whose zone the vehicle owner resides.
Step 3: Provide the list of required documents for the permanent number

i) Form-21: Sales declaration which you will get from the dealer
ii) Form-60/61  Income Tax Department or GIR or Pan card
iii) Pollution Under Control (PUC)
iv) Declaration by the candidate checked by a Notary, Executive
v) Address proof Any One (Voter ID Card/ LIC Policy/ Passport photos/ Ration Card
vi) Vehicle Insurance Certificate
vii) Road Worthiness Certificate i.e. Form 22
