Functions of Maharashtra RTO
The role and responsibility of Maharashtra RTO is to ensure smooth implementation of the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. Below are some of the functions that they need to perform :
- Conduct Driving Test and Issue Learner license to the applicant who pass the test.

Types of Vehicle Registration in Maharashtra
There are two types of vehicle registration in Maharashtra RTO Office:
- Temporary Vehicle Registration : is valid for only one month and it is allowed when the vehicle owner has to take vehicle to any other state. Temporary Vehicle Registration is not renewable.
- Permanent Vehicle Registration: Under Section 39 of the Motor Vehicle Act, permanent registration of all vehicles is necessary for driving on roads in Maharashtra. Driving without Registration Certificate (RC) is a punishable offense.

Vehicle Registration Process in Maharashtra
Normally when you buy a new vehicle RTO registration and Charges are done by the dealer itself but if case you want to get it bone by yourself then below is the process:
For Temporary Vehicle Registration:
Step 1: To apply for temporary number you have to fill Form 20, which serves as an application form.
Step 2: Fill Form 20 completely with all the necessary information and submit it to the RTO in whose zone the vehicle owner resides.
Step 3: Provide the list of required documents for the temporary number
i) Form-21: Sales declaration which you will get from dealer
ii) Form-60/61 Income Tax Department or GIR or Pan card
iii) Pollution Under Control (PUC)
iv) Declaration by the candidate checked by a Notary, Executive
v) Address proof Any One (Voter ID Card/ LIC Policy/ Passport photos/ Ration Card
vi) Road Worthiness Certificate i.e. Form 22

For Permanent Vehicle Registration
